Summer has finally arrived, and I wanted to provide a quick update on the GP product and services. We are nearly halfway through 2023 already which doesn’t seem possible right now.
The overall GP update schedule continues as it has for several years now. The mid-year update was released yesterday which as usual includes Canadian Tax updates along with bug fixes. In October, GP 18.6 is scheduled to be released which will have new functionality and that will be followed in November by the year-end tax update. This schedule has been very consistent and there are no changes planned in the future. GP will continue to receive updates into the future.
Microsoft did make an announcement in April about future Dynamics GP sales. I’ll outline those changes below. They have a small impact on most existing GP customers. The announcement does affect anyone looking to purchase GP as a new customer going forward. Here are the announcement details.
Affecting existing GP customers:
Annual enhancement plan costs will increase by 1%. That means your annual renewal invoice will be slightly higher starting in October 2023.
Additional user and module purchase prices will be increasing as of October 2023. Pricing details have not been announced yet.
Not Changing: GP will continue to be supported with no changes to updates or the product Roadmap currently published as 2028 and beyond.
Affecting new GP customers:
No new sales of Dynamics GP perpetual licenses as of April 1, 2025.
No new sales of Dynamics GP subscription licenses as of April 1, 2026.
What does that mean if you are a current GP customer? As outlined above, very little is changing for you. You will continue to receive product updates and be able to add users or modules when needed. If you do plan to make changes, doing so before October will save some money so act now. It is important to stay current with your annual enhancements going forward. If you are lapsed, you will want to talk with your partner now and get current before April 2025.
GP support and services are seeing no change – at least with me! I continue to support GP clients on a daily basis and that will not change with any of these announcements. With years of new releases of Dynamics GP on the roadmap – there is no need to change from a system that is working well for you. If you have any concerns, I’d be happy to discuss these details with you. If any partner is choosing to no longer support GP, that is their choice and is a good time to look for a new partner that will continue to support you.
With that said, some companies are looking for a different solution for a variety of reasons. I’ve worked with clients to move to Dynamics Business Central (BC). BC is a cloud-based offering from Microsoft and can meet the needs of most small businesses. It does however pose some challenges with GP customers that want to keep critical ISVs or other functionality that may not be available for BC now so careful planning and consideration is required. Microsoft will continue to focus it’s largest investments for small businesses into developing new features and functionality in BC.
The choice is yours, and that’s a good place to be as a business. Many companies successfully use GP and will continue to into the future. Some companies are looking to make a change because it’s the right move for their business. It’s important to understand the details and decide based on what is best for you.
